L’Associazione Culturale SilVer, con il patrocinio del Comune di Empoli, ha il grande piacere di presentare la Prima edizione del Concorso Nazionale di Pittura ‘Omaggio a Dylan Thomas’ in occasione del centenario dalla nascita del grande poeta gallese.
La finalità del concorso è quella di valorizzare il talento artistico dei partecipanti rendendoli protagonisti di un avvenimento culturale di notevole spessore offrendo loro la possibilità di esporre le proprie opere in occasione della manifestazione ‘ApritiChiostro 2014’, organizzata dal Comune di Empoli e dall’Assessorato alla Cultura. http://www.comune.empoli.fi.it/apriticentro/

Biografia di Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas nasce a Swansea (Galles) nel 1914, Dylan Marlais Thomas trascorse una infanzia e una adolescenza assimilando profondamente la tradizione celtica del Galles. Fu giornalista, sceneggiatore cinematografico e radiofonico, ineguagliabile dicitore e narratore, ma soprattutto poeta di impetuosa vitalità. Morì a New York nel 1953, distrutto dall'alcool, per una dose letale di droga.

Thomas già a vent'anni scosse l'ambiente letterario londinese con Diciotto poesie (Eighteen poems, 1934), che riproponeva una poesia magica, oscura ma anche naturale e istintiva, sostenuta da una personalità capace di diventare un mito per più di una generazione. Insieme a un altro gruppo di giovanissimi, si impose nell'ambito di un "nuovo romanticismo" come reazione all'intellettualismo e al classicismo di cui erano accusati W.H. Auden, e i poeti del suo gruppo. Dylan Thomas contrappose una forma di automatismo verbale, di deliberata retorica, amore per il suono delle parole. Del 1936 sono le Venticinque poesie (Twenty-five poems), cui seguirono Il mondo che respiro (The world I breathe, 1939), e La mappa d'amore (The map of love, 1939) che comprende liriche e prose.
Il libro che raccoglie le più note e forse più belle delle sue poesie è Morti e ingressi (Deaths and entrances, 1946). Le varie raccolte di poesie apparse tra il 1934 e il 1952 furono ripubblicate nel volume Poesie scelte 1934-1952. Al folto ma non ricchissimo gruppo delle sue poesie vanno aggiunte le prose lirico-narrative: Un ritratto dell'artista da cucciolo di cane (A portrait of the artists as a young dog, 1940), e il radiodramma Sotto il bosco di latte (Under the milk wood) pubblicato postumo nel 1954. Dopo la sua morte fu pubblicata anche una raccolta di Lettere scelte (Selected letters, 1966), eLettere a Vernon Watkins (Letters to Vernon Watkins, 1957) che suscitarono scandalo. Postumi apparvero ancora: Quite early one morning (1954), Adventures in the skin trade (1955).
La personalità poetica di Thomas si distingue dalla maggior parte delle voci del XX secolo per l'originalità di una scrittura in cui si fondono, su un sostrato celtico, i movimenti e le riscoperte più significative del secolo, dai surrealisti francesi alla visionarietà di Blake, alle metafore ardite dei metafisici del XVII secolo. Elemento unificante di tali influenze è dato dalla personale concezione che Thomas aveva dell'oralità della comunicazione poetica, secondo una appassionata tradizione della sua terra.

Oggetto del concorso

I partecipanti dovranno presentare 3 (tre) opere pittoriche di dimensioni max 70x100 relative ai seguenti temi:

a) Opera dedicata alla figura e alla biografia di Dylan Thomas;
b) Opera ispirata ad una poesia o a un racconto di Dylan Thomas a libera scelta;
c) Opera a libera scelta, meglio se attinente al mondo di Dylan Thomas;

Svolgimento del concorso
Il concorso si articolerà in due prove:
Eliminatoria: Per partecipare alla prima prova del concorso occorre inviare entro il 20 Febbraio 2014 i seguenti documenti:
1- Due (2) fotografie per ciascuna delle tre opere a concorso (totale 6 foto);
2- Scheda dettagliata relativa a: Titolo dell’opera, Materiale e tecnica utilizzati, Breve presentazione/descrizione delle opere presentate.
3- Curriculum artistico personale
4- Scheda di iscrizione debitamente compilata
5- Copia del bonifico di Euro 50 (Cinquanta, oo) non rimborsabile a titolo di iscrizione al Concorso
6- Copia di un documento di identità
Tutto il materiale dovrà essere inviato entro e non oltre il 20 febbraio 2014 (farà fede il timbro postale) al seguente indirizzo:

Finale: La Commissione Giudicatrice del I° Concorso Nazionale di Pittura ‘Omaggio a Dylan Thomas’ selezionerà, dopo la valutazione del materiale ricevuto, max 10 concorrenti finalisti per la partecipazione alla prova finale. I Finalisti saranno avvisati entro e non oltre il giorno 5 marzo 2014.
I Finalisti dovranno presentarsi personalmente il 15 marzo 2014 con le loro opere selezionate presso il Cenacolo degli Agostiniani in via de’Neri ad Empoli, luogo in cui si svolgerà la finale. La Commissione Artistica valuterà quindi le opere e proclamerà i vincitori (max 3) del I° Concorso Nazionale di Pittura ‘Omaggio a Dylan Thomas’.
Agli altri finalisti non premiati verrà restituita la quota di iscrizione (Euro 50, oo) a titolo di rimborso spese e saranno consegnati i diplomi di finalista.
Premi per i vincitori
Gli artisti proclamati vincitori del I° Concorso Nazionale di Pittura ‘Omaggio a Dylan Thomas’ saranno invitati ad esporre le proprie opere dedicate al poeta gallese in occasione della manifestazione ‘Apriti Chiostro 2014’, patrocinata dal Comune di Empoli e dall’Assessorato alla Cultura, in una mostra presso il Cenacolo degli Agostiniani della durata non inferiore ai 6 giorni, aperta al pubblico e alla presenza di importanti galleristi che verranno invitati personalmente dall’Associazione Culurale SIlVer.

Durante la serata di inaugurazione della mostra (in data da definire) si svolgerà al Cenacolo degli Agostiniani un reading delle poesie di Dylan Thomas con concerto e buffet offerto dalla Associazione Culturale SIlVer.
A ciascun artista vincitore saranno offerti una Borsa di Studio di Euro 150, oo (Centocinquanta, oo), l’alloggio per la serata dell’inaugurazione della mostra ed il Diploma d’Onore.
I Vincitori saranno altresì inseriti nella stagione artistica presso la Fornace Pasquinucci di Capraia Fiorentina (Fi) http://www.fornacepasquinucci.it/ e nella stagione artistica 2014/2015 dell’Associazione Culturale SilVer di Empoli.
Saranno invitati inoltre a far parte della commissione giudicatrice della Seconda edizione 2015 del Concorso Nazionale di Pittura.

The Cultural Association SilVer, under the patronage of the Municipality of Empoli, has the great pleasure to present the first edition of the National Painting Competition 'Homage to Dylan Thomas' on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the great Welsh poet.
The aim of the competition is to enhance the artistic talent of the participants making them the protagonists of a cultural event of considerable thickness by offering them the opportunity to exhibit their works at the event 'ApritiChiostro 2014', organized by the Municipality of Empoli and by the Department Culture. http://www.comune.empoli.fi.it/apriticentro/

Biography of Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea (Wales) in 1914, Dylan Marlais Thomas spent a childhood and adolescence deeply assimilating the Celtic tradition of Wales. He was a journalist, screenwriter and radio, unparalleled teller and narrator, but above all a poet of impetuous vitality. He died in New York in 1953, destroyed by alcohol, for a lethal dose of drugs.

Thomas already twenty years shook the literary London with poems Eighteen (Eighteen Poems, 1934), which re-proposed a poem magic, dark but also natural and instinctive, supported by a personality capable of becoming a myth for more than a generation. Together with another group of young people, was imposed as part of a "new romanticism" as a reaction to the classicism and the intellectualism of which they were accused WH Auden, and the poets of his group. Dylan Thomas opposed a form of verbal automatism, of deliberate rhetoric, love the sound of words. Twenty-five poems of 1936 are (Twenty-five poems), followed by the world that I breathe (I breathe The world, 1939), and The Map of Love (The map of love, 1939), which includes poems and prose.
The book collects the most famous and perhaps the most beautiful of his poems is Dead and inputs (Deaths and entrances, 1946). The various collections of poems appeared between 1934 and 1952 were republished in the book Selected Poems 1934-1952. To large but not very rich group of his poems must be added the lyric-narrative prose: A portrait of the artist as a puppy dog (A portrait of the artists as a young dog, 1940), and the radio play Under Milk Wood (Under the milk wood) was published posthumously in 1954. After his death was published as a collection of choices Letters (Selected letters, 1966), eLettere in Vernon Watkins (Letters to Vernon Watkins, 1957) which aroused scandal. After-effects appeared again: Quite Early One Morning (1954), Adventures in the Skin Trade (1955).
The poetic personality of Thomas stands out from most of the voices of the twentieth century for the originality of a writing which combine on a Celtic substratum, movements and significant discoveries of the century, the French surrealists visionary Blake, the metaphors bold metaphysicians of the seventeenth century. The unifying element of these influences is given by the personal conception of the requirement that Thomas had poetic communication, according to a passionate tradition of his homeland.

Subject of the competition

Entrants must submit three (3) paintings of max 70x100 relation to the following:

a) Work dedicated to the figure and biography of Dylan Thomas;
b) Work inspired by a poem or a short story by Dylan Thomas's free choice;
c) Work to free choice, better if relevant to the world of Dylan Thomas;

The competition
The contest is divided into two parts:
Preliminary: To participate in the first round of the competition must be sent by February 20, 2014 the following documents:
1 - Two (2) photographs for each of the three works to the competition (6 total photos)
2 - Detailed information concerning: Title of the work, materials and technique used, Short presentation / description of the works presented.
3 - Curriculum artistic staff
4 - Application form duly completed
5 - Copy of the transfer of € 50 (Fifty, oo) as non-refundable fee to the Competition
6 - Copy of an identity document
All material must be sent no later than February 20, 2014 (it will be the postmark) to the following address:

Finale: The Jury of the First National Painting Competition 'Homage to Dylan Thomas' select, after the evaluation of the material received, max 10 finalists for participation in the final test. Finalists will be notified no later than March 5, 2014.
Finalists will be required to appear in person March 15, 2014 with their selected works at the Cenacle of the Augustinians in via de'Neri at Empoli, where the final will take place. The Artistic Committee will then evaluate the works and will announce the winners (maximum 3) of the First National Painting Competition 'Homage to Dylan Thomas'.
The other finalists not awarded will be refunded the registration fee (Euro 50, oo) by way of reimbursement of expenses and will be delivered the diplomas of finalist.
Prizes for the winners
The artists announced winners of the First National Painting Competition 'Homage to Dylan Thomas' will be invited to exhibit their works dedicated to the Welsh poet on the occasion of the event 'Cloister Blast 2014', sponsored by the Municipality of Empoli and by the Culture, in an exhibition at the Cenacle of the Augustinians of the duration of not less than 6 days, which is open to the public and to the presence of important gallery that will be personally invited by the culurale Silver.

During the opening night of the exhibition (date to be determined) will be held at the Cenacle of the Augustinians a reading of poems by Dylan Thomas with concert and buffet offered by the Cultural Association Silver.
Each winning artist will be offered a scholarship of € 150, oo (One hundred and fifty, oo), the accommodation for the evening of the exhibition and the Diploma of Honor.
Winners will also be included in the artistic season at the Fornace Pasquinucci of Capraia Fiorentina (Florence) http://www.fornacepasquinucci.it/ and artistic season 2014/2015 of the Cultural SilVer of Empoli.
Also will be invited to be part of the jury of the 2015 edition of the Second National Painting Competition.
